I had a chance to try a bottle of Martini & Rossi Prosecco, one of their new sparkling wines or “vino frizzante” recently. I need to preface this with the fact that I am a big champagne lover. I love it. I crave it. I prefer it over almost anything usually. But I was given a bottle of this Prosecco and was curious to see how it would compare. I cleared my mind of all preconceived notions of sparkling wine to give it the full benefit of my opinion. I was confused at the lack of cork stopper, with a cap in its place. I didn’t let that sway me. The bottle is attractive and its packaged with the trademark Martini & Rossi label and has a classy appearance.
This is far less bubbly than you might expect. It has a subtle effervescence which compliments the flavor nicely. The flavor when cooled at the right temperature is described as “delicate bodied” but I would describe it more towards the “confidently bodied” as this wine doesn’t leave you wondering what the heck you were drinking. It has a definite flavor… clean on the palette, light and with hints of fruit like apple and peach. The clean flavor would make this perfect for light pork or salmon meals and is best when served chilled but not too cold.
This would make a perfect hostess gift for a cocktail or dinner party. I don’t think I will make it part of my permanent collection but if I find myself serving up a light summer meal I will definitely pair it up with this. Overall it gets my thumbs up.
